What is the difference between a patch and a mod PC games?

I'm a fan of PC games. I just want to know the difference between a patch and a mod and how I want to upgrade my game to a higher version from V1.0 to V1.1?

A patch is directly by the developer that produced The Game and is 99% guaranteed to make the game go better. A mod is a general change, created by the user code to make the game play (sometimes) more fun or interesting. The patches tend to fix the broken code on a game to make it playable, or add new features to the code to create additional content for the user. Mods often modify the code around to make a game function.
